Measure how closely a person keeps time with a beat

A steady beat, a finger tap or hand clap, and clear timing measures in milliseconds, beat by beat — with nothing ever leaving the device.

What it measures

Keeping time with a beat, measured response by response

Tempo Trace plays a steady metronome beat and measures how closely each response — a finger tap on the screen, or a hand clap heard by the microphone — lines up with it. Every response gets a signed timing offset in milliseconds: negative means early, before the beat; positive means late, after it. It's a timing measurement tool that uses a metronome beat. The app measures and reports timing — it doesn't interpret or diagnose.

Two response methods

Finger Tap or Clap

Finger Tap

The person taps a large target area on the screen in time with the beat. Timing uses the moment the finger touches down — not when it lifts — taken directly from the touchscreen's own timestamp. iPhone and iPad.

Clap

The person claps in time with the beat, with the phone flat on a table — no need to touch the device during the session. The microphone detects each clap, and the app tells claps apart from its own beat, even when a clap lands right on it. iPhone only, because of microphone constraints on iPad.

Clap mode is available on iPhone only, because of microphone constraints on iPad — Finger Tap works on both iPhone and iPad. Tap and clap results are kept separate and labelled — they're measured differently and aren't meant to be compared with each other.

Two modes

A feedback-free measure, or practice with feedback

Testing

No feedback of any kind during the session — no scores, counters, early/late indicators, sounds or vibrations. The screen stays neutral and shows only the time remaining.

Training

After each response the screen shows EARLY →, ON BEAT ◎ or ← LATE, with an arrow pointing toward the correction for the next response. Arrow size reflects how far off the response was.

A workflow built for real administration

From set-up to reading the result, every session follows the same clear process.

1
Choose method & mode

Finger Tap or Clap, Testing or Training.

2
Set tempo & duration

Use a preset or enter an exact value, then play a sample beat to check the volume.

3
Administer

A 4-beat count-in at the same tempo, then the session. The beat comes from the audio system with sample-level precision and is never shifted by the person’s responses.

4
Read the results

Summary measures plus a beat-by-beat chart, clearly labelled.

Session settings

Set it up once, repeat it consistently

Tempo from 30 to 100 BPM — presets at 44, 54, 60 and 80 BPM, plus a slider, − / + buttons and exact custom values
Duration from 20 seconds to 5 minutes — presets at 30 sec, 1 min and 2 min, plus custom
On-beat window of ±30, ±50 or ±75 ms, or a custom value
Save any setting as the default for future sessions
Play a sample beat
Reading the result

Clear timing measures

The primary figure is the mean signed offset — on average, how early or late the person was — which maps directly to the Training arrows. There's no composite score, and any measure with too few valid responses is shown as unavailable rather than as a misleading zero. Every result is labelled with method, mode, tempo, duration and status.

Average absolute offset — distance from the beat, ignoring direction
Timing variability — the standard deviation of offsets (lower is more consistent)
Percentage of responses within the on-beat window
Valid responses out of beats played, plus missed beats and extra responses
For Clap, low-confidence detections counted separately and left out of the timing measures
A beat-by-beat chart, with late responses above the line, early below, and the on-beat window shaded
A Session details panel showing the device, iOS version, audio output and input, settings and analysis versions
Tempo Trace result screen on iPad: mean signed offset, timing variability, on-beat window percentage and beat-by-beat chart

Reliability and data integrity

Interrupted sessions are labelled — a phone call, leaving the app, a Stop or an audio change pauses the session straight away. Resuming starts a fresh count-in and marks the result "Interrupted"; ending early marks it "Stopped early". Neither is ever shown as a normal completed result.
A room check before Clap measures background noise and asks for two test claps, gives clear guidance if the room is too noisy, and lets you switch to Finger Tap in one tap.
Live noise monitoring during Clap — a signal indicator based only on room noise, never on how the person is performing, and a "Claps are hard to hear" banner if noise rises mid-session.
Uncertain claps aren't guessed — they're marked low confidence and left out of the timing measures rather than given an invented time.
Bluetooth, AirPlay and similar wireless audio are blocked because their delay varies — the app asks for the phone’s own speaker.
Accidental double contacts from a single tap are filtered without rejecting genuine fast responses.
Beat matching follows a fixed, documented rule — each beat accepts the first response within a set window — so stray responses are counted as Extra rather than distorting the timing.
Built for the clinic

Private by design

Clap detection, matching and scoring all happen on the device. Clap mode analyses sound as it arrives and never records or saves audio. There's no account, no network connection, and no analytics or advertising SDKs of any kind.

100% on-device
Detection, matching and scoring run on the device. Audio is never recorded or saved.
No cloud, no account
No sign-in and no network connection. Results exist only on the results screen.
No ads, no tracking
No analytics or advertising SDKs of any kind.

Accessible by default

Dynamic Type up to the largest accessibility sizes, with layouts that reflow
VoiceOver labels throughout, including a spoken description of the beat-by-beat chart
Selection and feedback never rely on colour alone, and Reduce Motion is respected

Who it's for

Neurology

A quick, repeatable, quantified measure of keeping time with an external beat.

Physiotherapy & neurological rehabilitation

Training mode gives immediate early/late feedback for practice; Testing mode gives a feedback-free measure.

Occupational therapy

Timing and coordination tasks with a simple, consistent set-up.

Research

Beat-level timing data, with full settings, device and analysis-version labelling on every result.

Common questions

What do I need to use it?

An iPhone or iPad for Finger Tap. Clap mode is available on iPhone only, because of microphone constraints on iPad — it also needs a reasonably quiet room and the phone lying flat on a table.

Does the app diagnose or interpret results?

No. Tempo Trace doesn't give a diagnosis, an impairment classification, a treatment recommendation, a normative comparison or a composite score. It measures timing — the interpretation is always yours.

How does Clap mode handle background noise?

There's a room check before the first Clap session and live noise monitoring during it, and low-confidence claps are left out of the timing measures. If the room isn't suitable, you can switch to Finger Tap in one tap.

Can I use headphones or Bluetooth?

Bluetooth and AirPlay are blocked because their delay varies, so use the device's built-in speaker. Wired headphones are allowed for Finger Tap but are flagged as unvalidated.

Is audio recorded?

No. Sound is analysed on the device as it arrives and is discarded straight away — it is never recorded, saved or uploaded. Read our privacy policy for details.

Can I export or save results?

Not in the current version — results aren't kept after you leave the results screen, so note down anything you need first. Get in touch if export is something you need.

How much does it cost?

Pricing varies by region — see the App Store for the price in your country once Tempo Trace launches.

When is it launching?
